Approaching Mile 16. The field has expanded. The lead runner from the 6:30am start is two minutes ahead; the next runner is two minutes behind. The sun is burning off the early morning fog, revealing stellar views toward Mt. Diablo on this stretch of the Skyline Trail. Runners are approaching the very volcano that made the hills they are running on today. The temperature is 51 degrees, and there are a just over 34 miles left to run.
