Jasmine's dad was in the army, and he wasn't home all that often, but when he was, he'd tell fantastical stories of the battles he'd fought. Minney's mother and older brother, Matthew, thought they were bloody and gross, and not fitting for a little girl to listen to, but Jasmine never got enough of them. Ever since she was itty-bitty, she's wanted to join the military and serve her country, just like her Pa.
