It was thought the Romans did not use water powered trip hammers, but the latest research indicates they may have used them. Roman anvils appear too large to have been forged by hand.... This carved plaque shows the forge and bellows on the left, and some of the tools and products on the right. The lock indicates he may have also specialised as a locksmith.. Unusually, the smith is seated, possibly indicating age or infirmity...
