The ammonite, an extinct marine invertebrate, is a common index fossil today. But aside from scientific research it has popped up in art history a few times. During the medieval period in England, people believed these fossils were petrified coiled snakes, called them "serpantstones," and even carved or painted snakes inside their shell.
