All-in-One Teacher Binder {printable}

I just love binders! I like how everything can be sorted into neat little, hidden files, then stowed away oh so nicely on the shelf. However, I think I might like binders (as in the plural form) a bit too much. See photo evidence here. Thanks to the fabulous Leslie, from Kindergarten Works, I have decided to consolidate my system. Leslie just posted an incredible entry on her blog about how she keeps everything important together in one binder, in her post on Binder Basics. (By the way, if…

{Peek of the Week} A Peek into Courtney’s 5th Grade Classroom

Peek of the Week is back, and I have so many beautiful classrooms to share with you! I have been on a little blogging hiatus over the summer while spending quality time with my family, and it has been so wonderful! Alas, it's time to get back into the swing of things, and I'm thrilled to share Courtney's 5th grade classroom tour with you! I had the pleasure of meeting Courtney from the blog Ramona Recommends while in Las Vegas for the Teachers Pay Teachers conference. She is as sweet as can…

The First Grade Parade - marching through a primary world

When I taught Kindergarten, we usually used Chrysanthemum to introduce names. Of course, it’s a great book to discuss what it means to be unique and special, too. There are SO many different ways you can use this book! During the first week of school, we used Chrysanthemum to discuss the impact unkind words have on our hearts. I cut out a giant heart using red butcher paper. Before I started reading the story, I handed the heart to one of my kids and gave them instructions to crumple the…

1st Grade Schedule: A Day in the Life - The Brown Bag Teacher

What does a day look like in my classroom? How do we organize and structure our time together? These are two of the most common questions I receive each week, so today I wanted to share with you a basic overview of our daily schedule (barring no interruptions). Throughout this post, I’ve linked lots of...

Daily Schedule - Theme

I teach my science, social studies, and health in blocks. I try to make sure I cover one unit from each subject each term (Sept-Nov, Dec-Mar, Apr-June). Here's a little monthly break down of how I split up the different curriculums: I usually have about an hour for theme (some days a half-hour), so I usually break my time into three parts: the lesson, interactive journals, and explore tubs. I tend to read a lot of books to introduce topics and ideas. Then we might do an activity, such as…
