Boiseries in the Private apartments of King Louis XV at Versailles. The suite is exquisite but fragile, because Louis undermined it's structural integrity by constant remodeling throughout his life. The rooms were built in the space once occupied by the famous but structurally unsound Staircase of the Ambassadors. Jeff

Visiting Versailles - A Private Backstage Tour

When visiting Versailles just outside Paris you'll see only a small percentage of the palace. It's still a fab experience but here is what you don't see.

Private Versailles

Versailles, both in the age of Louis XIV and now, is a very public place. Tens of thousands of people called it home back in the age of kings and today thousands of visitors come daily. We got to witness this on a VERY crowded Sunday when we visited during Heather's and my trip to Paris as you can see below.Levels of security exist even outside of the Palace walls. I particularly loved these wood guard stations disguised as tents: a technique copied at palaces around Europe in the 18th…

Apartments assigned to Axel Fersen, alleged love interest of Marie Antoinette, located above the Queen's private apartments, were originally the chambers of the first valet for both Louis XIV and Louis XV.

Apartments assigned to Axel Fersen

During the reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV this was the chambers of the first valet. It was these rooms that Count Fersen stayed in when he visited Versailles - Louis XVI had his first valet housed elsewhere. Count Fersen himself even noted in a letter to his friend Josephine on 3 March 1787: "Plan of living up stairs". Also, his rooms are located above the Queen's private apartments.
