Osborne Anderson was the only African American to Survive, among the five Black Men that accompanied John Brown on the raid on Harpers Ferry!  In 1861 Anderson wrote A Voice From Harper’s Ferry. He believed that southern accounts were biased, he felt compelled to give an account of the event from the raiders’ perspective. http://www.cafepress.com/gkcstore

September 15, 1963 · Birmingham, Alabama Virgil Lamar Ware, 13, was riding on the handlebars of his brother’s bicycle when he was fatally shot by white teenagers. The white youths had come from a segregationist rally held in the aftermath of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing.

The first graves in Arlington National Cemetery were dug by James Parks, a former slave. Parks was freed in 1862 He still lived on Arlington Estate when Secretary of War Stanton signed the orders designating Arlington as a military burial ground. Parks worked as a grave digger and maintenance man for the cemetery. When he died on Aug. 21, 1929, Secretary of War Stimson granted special permission for him to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
