Cape: 1873, American, wool. "This intriguing cape was exhibited at the Vienna Universal Exhibition in 1873. Its elaborate knitting techniques and unique overall appearance enforce the importance of handmade crafts and decorations which were becoming progressively important nearing the end of the 19th century."

Ballgown, early 1860s. From a past ebay auction (Time Travelers Antiques.) The seller said c. 1864, but I think that’s latest possible date. Ballgown styles don’t change too much until 1865-6 with the new straight waists, tiny sleeves, and elliptical skirts. This bodice with the deep pointed waist and very wide berthe could easily be from 1860. The combination of pink windowpane sheer silk with the band of printed silk is amazing. The berthe is trimmed with expensive bobbin lace.

1864-67 This versatile day-into-evening dress, with its sophisticated color juxtaposition, provides an insight into the subtle considerations that defined Worth’s designs. By providing his client a dress with both a day and evening bodice, he was able to justify his extraordinary pricing by maximizing a garment’s wearability.
