1973. The American Indian Movement occupies Wounded Knee, South Dakota. Leaders Russell Means and Carter Camp, with 200 activists and the Lakota Sioux of the Pine Ridge Reservation occupied the town for 71 days to protest government failures to honor treaties with Native Americans.
