Fabergé egg-shaped box, c. 1903. Rock crystal, two-colour gold, rose diamonds. Provenance: Probably acquired by Queen Alexandra; in the Royal Collection by 1953. Birbaum, Fabergé’s chief designer, describes how rock crystal was difficult to carve because it was prone to crumbling; it was worked on only by the most experienced workmasters. As it could not tolerate heat from soldering, any settings such as the gold and diamond clasp on this box, had to be assembled with clips and pins.

The lid of this box, in yellow guilloché enamel in a sunburst design, displays the Romanov double-headed eagle in gold, enamel and diamonds. Mark of Michael Perchin. It was purchased by the Maharaja of Bikanir from Wartski on 15 May 1937 at a cost of £95 and given to Queen Mary for her birthday, 26 May 1937.

Egg-shaped box of rhodonite with forward opening gold hinge at front and rose diamond fleur-de-lys surround, tapering rose diamond thumbpiece and gold clasp.Fabergé was strongly influenced by the tradition of hardstone carving in Russia, which was centred on Ekaterinburg. ThIs unique snuffbox was created in 1770 from 3'ooo diamonds and gold and belonged to King of Prussia Frederick the Great. Empress Alexandra, wife of Nikolay II also owned it until 1917. The next owner was Queen Mary, grandmother of HMTQ Elizabeth II.
