Canyonlands Layer Cake
Late sunlight intensifes the wonderful diverse colors of the Canyonlands National Park. This view allows those who behold it to see all the multiple layers of sandstone, and at the highest elevation granite. In this area near Dead Horse Point State Park(a small area along the cliffs of the larger CanyonlandsNP) the elevation rises from about 3500 ft to 7500 at the upper rim, and then as high as 12000 ft in the overlooking LaSal mountains. The colors represent the many layers of sandstone…

Chimney Rock
First of all, I think a law should be adopted stating that no rock formation be named Chimney Rock. :-) It seems that there's one such named formation in every county of every state in the southwestern US! This particular formation can be found in Utah's Capitol Reef National Park and it is a beauty, no doubt. Park Avenue @ Dusk
A few leftovers of Arches National Park from my visit to Utah last fall. Such an extraordinary place to visit! My girlfriend and I had spent most of this day at the Canyon Lands but despite visiting Arches pretty thoroughly the day before, we stopped by again on our way back to Moab. We caught Park Avenue just as the sun was starting to go down and there was a sliver in the clouds enough for the sun to shine through - it just caused the colors to really pop and ultimately created one of my…

Autumn's Glow
A cottonwood tree along the Virgin River in Zion National Park, UT basks in the warm glow of reflected light. Reflected light is one most desirable lighting conditions to look for when shooting in the desert southwest. It occurs when the sun directly lights an adjacent red rock wall which bounces this light onto an opposing shadowed area. This shadowed area is thus bathed in a warm glowing light resulting in the saturated colors you see above. You can read more about my autumn trip to Zion…

Waterfall at Temple of Sinawava
An orange-walled natural amphitheater called the Temple of Sinawava unofficially marks the beginning of Zion Canyon, where the Virgin River flows upstream through ever-narrowing, towering canyons of sandstone to the Zion Narrows.
