A group of modern artists who from 1904 to 1908 were united in their use of intense color. They employed shrill colors as they came out from the tubes. The jarring intensity would break the rules of color harmony and the result would be a roar - hence "the Beasts". Fauvism was the first of the avant-garde movements that flourished in France in the early years of the twentieth century. Principle artists were Matisse, Manguin, Derain, Dufy, Vlaminck, Valtat.
