Once playfully nicknamed the "Summer Capital," Long Branch played host to seven successive vacationing presidents, from Chester Arthur to Woodrow Wilson. Once laws passed at the turn of the 20th century made gambling illegal in the city, however, the crowds that had previously been drawn to the area began to flock elsewhere.
