Gutenberg bible

Rolling off the same printing press as Johannes Gutenberg’s celebrated production of 1455, this 1462 two-volume Biblia latina, published in Mainz by Gutenberg’s direct successors (and former associates), Johannes Fust and Peter Schöffer, is headed to auction in Hamburg later this month, where it is expected to reach €1 million—or about 1.1 million American dollars.

Gutenberg Bible 1460s Incunable (Ms. 15) 119v Lambeth Palace Library, London. The Gutenberg or 42-line Bible was the first substantial book printed in Europe, completed in Mainz about 1454-55. It was made to resemble a manuscript, with blank spaces left for the illumination. Copies were sent out for sale across Europe, and were decorated on arrival. This copy reached England and was illuminated in London.
