Lavina Fontana was a Mannerist artist who lived and worked in Rome during the 16th century. Her father, Prospero Fontana was also an artist, and helped to train his daughter. Art historians often refer to her as the first woman in western Europe to make a career out of art. Her husband served as her agent and the commissions she painted helped to support him and their eleven children.
