Modernist jewelry

Art Smith, born in Cuba in 1917 to Jamaican parents in Cuba. His family settled in Brooklyn in 1920 and Smith showed artistic talent at an early age.

A fine, hand wrought modernist sterling silver choker necklace by the California studio jeweler, Gerald Stinn, (1937-2019). Made up of ten lightly hammered angled links with small connectors. You can have the links all facing the same way or alternate them for an interesting effect. Measures about 15 1/2" long and 1/2" wide. Probably better for a more slender neck, although an extender can be added. Hook closure holds securely. Marked Stinn Sterling. In very nice condition. Quality piece.

Art Smith designed cuff links for Duke Ellington and a brooch for Eleanor Roosevelt. His work was featured in Vogue and Harper's Bazaar (in the 1950's), and he moved in the same circles as James Baldwin, Harry Belafonte and Lena Horne. "His designs were interesting and modern.
