Overlooking a scenic landscape near the foot of the mountain, this house was stretched from north to south across the plot to let the view soak into every room and defined the private garden and swimming pool to the west and parking area with a small garden to the east of the house. Designing a house in the tropics, should always try to consider and respond to the climate. This design approach is becoming increasingly relevant because of climate change. When designing and building your home in a tropical climate, they are vital principles that you should consider. Strategies include site orientation, solar shading, passive ventilation, construction materials and roof design. These are all principles associated with tropical architecture.

The striking feature of the Trop V House is the double-skin roof that employs steel louvers to create a shaded, ventilated space above a lower tiled roof. Th e house has a number of features that are reminiscent of the architect’s own residence, Baan Tawanork that I featured in The New Thai House in 2003.
