Vladimir I Svyatoslavich of Kiev (c958-1015) - Vladimir the Great became convinced that a monotheistic religion would consolidate his power, as Christianity and Islam had done for neighboring rulers. When emperor Basil II of Byzantium sought military aid from Vladimir, he agreed, in exchange for Basil’s sister Anne in marriage. A pact was reached about 987, when Vladimir also consented to the condition that he become a Christian.
