Wanda Rutkiewicz (1943–1992) was a Polish mountain climber. She was the first woman to successfully summit K2. On 16 October 1978, she became the third woman, the first European woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest. In 1986 she became the first woman to successfully climb and descend K2, which she did without supplemental oxygen, as part of a small expedition led by Lilliane and Maurice Barrard. Wojciech Kilar, a Polish pianist and composer of classical music and scores for many films, including Roman Polanski’s Oscar-winning “The Pianist” and Francis Ford Coppola’s “Bram Stoker’s Dracula,” died Sunday. He was 81.
Bl. Jerzy Popiełuszko:courageous young priest martyr who became chaplain and spiritual leader of trade union in Poland in t/1980's. At 37, Fr. Popiełuszko was brutally murdered by Communist agents for his outspoken defense of his people, & proclaiming t/teachings of t/Church on human rights & t/dignity of t/human person. Over 700,000 attended his funeral, & a national shrine at his grave in front of his parish church in Warsaw is visited by a million people yearly. He was beatified in 2010.
