Robe a L'Anglaise. 1780. Front view. Netherlands of Indian cotton. Resist- and mordant-dyed, block-printed, painted and lined. (T.217-1992). The printed gold spot pattern would have been applied to an adhesive, probably gum arabic, after the chintz fabric had been painted and dyed.

Recipe for Jane Austen's iron gall ink: “Take 4 ozs of blue gauls [gallic acid, made from oak apples], 2 ozs of green copperas [iron sulphate], 1 1/2 ozs of gum arabic. Break the gauls.
