Bizarre Animals We Never Knew Existed

When discussing the dumbo octopus it’s important to note that this name doesn’t refer to one specific octopus, but rather an entire genus of octopus that lives deep in the open ocean. They’re rarely seen and live at depths of least 13,100 feet, possible deeper.

Okapis are herbivores, feeding on tree leaves and buds, grasses, ferns, fruits and fungi. Although the okapi bears striped markings reminiscent of zebras, it is most closely related to the giraffe.

The Saint Louis Zoo's newest baby, Bexley, a tree kangaroo

Kasbeth, a tree kangaroo and new mother, eats an afternoon snack with her 7-month-old baby Bexley inside the St. Louis Zoo's Emerson Children's Zoo on Thursday, Aug. 30, 2012. Bexley,

I want to see an okapi! They're so weirdly beautiful, and a relative of the giraffe :)

Okapi (Okapia johnstoni)

A shot of an okapi at Chester Zoo, UK. I find these beautiful animals extremely difficult to photograph as they rarely pose in such a pleasing way. Thus I am quite happy with this photo, even if it does have the enclosure in the background!

allcreatures: This little echidna is lucky to be alive after being found wandering down the middle of the street in Victoria, Australia. Megan Wilson first spotted the spiky creature and scooped him up and took him to the Healesville Animal Sanctuary. Palawan Bearcat or Binturong of the Philippine Islands inhabits thick vegetation in the lowland forests of Palawan. It camouflages itself in dense vegetation in the forest canopy to escape predators.

Palawan Bearcat

The Binturong (Arctictis binturong), also known as the Asian Bearcat, the Palawan Bearcat, or simply the Bearcat, is a species of the family Viverridae, which includes the civets and genets. It is neither a bear nor a cat, and the real meaning of the original name is lost, as the local language that gave it is extinct[3]. Its natural habitat is in trees of forest canopy in rainforest of Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burma, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Nepal, the Philippines, Thailand, and…

African linsangs vary in color, and resemble an elongated cat. The African linsang is nocturnal, and generally lives alone or in a pair. They construct arboreal nests 2 meters above the ground with green materials. They only stay in a nest for a short amount of time before moving on to make a new nest. Very rarely, several linsangs will stay in the same nesting place. On average, linsangs in the wild live for about 5.3 years.

The Golden Tabby Tiger, also known as The Strawberry Tiger, is very rare and there are only 30 of them in captivity.
