Inspiration for Composition
I'm trying to make friends with my watercolors: we haven't known each other all that long and I really want to incorporate them in my art journaling practice. But it was a bit intimidating, and not very inspiring, to see them all neatly lined up in their case... Time to shake things up and take them out! I've selected a few favorites and added a few extra ones I've purchased individually (like a lovely turquoise of course!). Amid all the packing and shipping of my paintings (almost there!), it f
I love to expand my comfort zone in gentle ways, so when I want to make friends a color I don't often use (yellow for instance), I look for an image that inspires me and has this color as well as others that come more naturally to me. Working with this "borrowed" color palette allows me to practice and experiment in a way that feels fun and not too scary! This is one of the exercises we play with in my online class Soulful Abstracts, as we uncover our personal art language!
DAY 5: Texture and Collage! Collage is probably my favorite technique of all, so I've kept the best for last! I love the serendipity of this process and how quickly it allows you to build a piece and create an atmosphere. It's not too late to get started with my FREE video workshop all about mixed media art supplies and learn plenty of my favorite tips!
Mark-making is such a personal thing, a bit like your creative fingerprints! They convey the energy that you felt in a particular moment, giving it a visual form, and nobody will ever create the same combination of lines, shapes and movement as you. Even if you are a complete beginner, you already have a unique mark-making signature: explore it, practice it and build upon it! To me, this is one of the absolute best ways to develop your own style, especially with abstract art.
Nature is an endless source of inspiration... and painting tools! This is one of the ideas we have crazy fun with as we explore the mark-making possibilities of our everyday surroundings in 🌿Soulful Abstracts.🌿The bonus is that we end up with a whole collection of personal marks and a beautiful stash of completely unique painted papers to then use in our art!
Do you sometimes see a work of art and just really really want to touch it?... LOL, me too! 😂Especially when I see art online, I sometimes wish I could reach out through the screen and run my fingers all over those beautiful layers. Texture truly is key when it comes to creating an emotional connection through our art, plus it's such a delightful part of the creative process, which is why we explore it to our heart's (and fingers') content in Soulful Abstracts: After playing with a whole variet
Day 2: Acrylics! This week we're exploring Mixed Media Art Supplies with my FREE 5-day video workshop, and you're invited! Are you ready to play and learn plenty of my best tips along the way? Sign up now and get started!
One of the questions I often get from my art journaling students is “How to prevent my journal pages from sticking together?” There’s a very simple and easy little trick that I use and it works like magic! I’m sharing it on my blog in a quick video so your beautiful pages never have to stick again.
