WHAT WE CHOSE: _________________ Black Diamond Quartzite (Honed) with a Cove Ogee edge profile ***Other options we considered — GRANITE didn’t have the movement and lines I wanted. QUARTZ options looked close to soapstone, but I really wanted natural stone with unique movement, and not strategically placed printed lines for the kitchen island. When we were building our home, I knew I wanted a dark kitchen island countertop with dark wood paired with lighter perimeter cabinets with lighter countertops. My heart was 100% sold on beautiful soapstone. THE DRAWBACKS: _________________ As I researched, was cautioned away by multiple people, saw photos online, read horror stories, and saw images of chipped, scratched, dented, discolored soapstone… I was scared off. I appreciate patina… but this seemed to go beyond that. I understand there some soapstones hold up better than others, but still… I didn’t want to have to run the risk. Plus it would be expensive!! I let go of my soapstone dreams in exchange for durability. After all, my kitchen would be heavily used. Black Diamond Quartzite wasn’t as affordable as quartz, but our slabs were far more affordable than the soapstone we’d been looking at. …The best part?? No dings, dents, chips, or discoloration since we got it a year ago. It has been a dream. But as I researched, saw photos online, read horror stories, and saw images of chipped, scratched, dented, discolored soapstone… my heart sank. I appreciate patina… but this seemed to go beyond that. I understand there are some soapstones that hold up better than others, but still… I didn’t want to have to potentially worry or fuss over my countertops that much. WHAT WE CHOSE: ________________________ ~ Black Diamond Quartzite ~ **honed I made the decision to let go of my soapstone dreams in exchange for something durable. After all, my kitchen would be heavily used.
