On the island of #Naxos, the May Day custom of donkey-raising lives on! Yearly, on the eve of May 1st, natives haul the donkeys on the terraces of houses to lower them down at noon during the May Day celebration for spectators to see. The origins of the tradition are unclear; one theory holds that it originated as means of courtship for young men to awe female admirers, another that the donkeys were raised to be hidden from those who preferred to work instead of celebrating the Labor day.
