Amplifying Your Instruction with Hands-On Activities

AMPLIFYING your ESL instruction is all about increasing comprehensible input for your students. In other words, ELLs learn best when you use instructional strategies that make your teaching (input) as easy to understand as possible (comprehensible). Makes sense, right? Amplification strategies are easy to adapt to whatever content you are teaching, and they are naturally differentiating (meaning students of all language abilities will benefit from their use). AMPLIFICATION STRATEGY: Use…

Workshops and rainy nights

Thursday afternoon I rushed around my classroom, planning for a substitute. If there is anything I hate more, I cannot think of it. Trust me, I would so much rather be in my classroom! I will say; however, that this day and a half in workshops was well worth it. I feel lucky to be a part of the Arkansas Benchmark Review Committee. The entire process of creating, field testing, and then launching an exam of such importance seems so daunting, but to be a part of it for a year now has very…

New Adventures in First Grade

I have to admit.... Writers Workshop has been kicking my butt this year (and my students!). Although we have followed the Calkins model of workshop for almost 10 years, we were using the mini-lessons provided by our ISD and supplementing with some of our favorite Teachers College authors. This year, we began using the Units of Study for First Grade in order to better focus on the goals of the CCSS. There is a set for each grade: Link to Publisher & Resources The expectations are REALLY…

Big, beautiful (and busy!) world

Such a busy day we had on a day that should be filled with moments of silence and remembrance. For today's post I think I will start by sharing my first (and most important for this date) picture books for the day: September 12th We Knew Everything Would Be All Right by Masterson Elementary Students and There's A Big, Beautiful World Out There by Nancy Carlson are both wonderful ways to bring such a difficult topic to the carpet. My sweet fourth graders have such a difficult time…
