Lt Lydia Litvyak (1921-1943) on the wing of her Yak 1B fighter plane. Lydia was an ace by 1941 serving with the 73rd Guards Figher Aviation Regiment. Her exploits during the Battle of Stalingrad led the Germans to name her "The White Rose of Stalingrad." Lydia was shot down on Aug 1, 1943 during heavy fighting in the Donbass region. Her remains were discovered in 1979 and in 1990 she was named Hero of the Soviet Union by President Gorbachev. Killed In Action
