Phlyctenular ("Phlyctena" Greek word for "blister") Keratoconjunctivitis or PKC is localized, subepithelial, wedge shaped nodular inflammation of the conjunctiva and/or cornea 2ndry to an allergic hypersensitivity response to Staph bacterium usually from chronic blepharitis or in suspicious cases assoc'd with tuberculosis infection. Treatment incl lid hygiene, anti-inflammatory and/or anti-bacterials depending on severity. In non-resolving cases, order chest x-ray and PPD to rule out TB.

A 19-year-old man presented to our ophthalmology clinic with a mass in his right eye that had been present since birth but had gradually increased in size. He did not have pain, but the mass caused vision defects, mild discomfort on blinking, and the intermittent sensation of the presence of a foreign body. Physical examination revealed a white, ovoid mass, 5 mm by 6 mm, that straddled the inferotemporal limbus (Panel A), with several black hairs (Panel B)...

Recent studies have shown that only ~16% of patients who have had diabetes for over 15 years show proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) changes on exam. Though PDR only accounts for a small % of cases, it is responsible for a majority of blindness caused by diabetes. PDR is characterized by a growth of abnormal blood vessels within the retina as a result of ischemia. These abnormal blood vessels can leak profusely, causing serious damage to the retina and hemorrhaging into the vitreous
