The typical Roman legionnaire carryed a Gladius in battle. A short sword  used mainly as a close quarter stabbing weapon. Also the Pilum,made especially for the legionnaire. He carried two Pila (the pural of Pilum) each one was relatively light and when the legion was marching they were carried in the free hand (the other one carried the pack) in battle the Pila was attached to the Scutum, a tall shield that was the identifying mark of the legionnaire, an essential piece of roman strategy.
