Jan Davidsz de Heem (Dutch, 1606–1683/84). Still Life with a Glass and Oysters, ca. 1640. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Purchase, 1871 (71.78) | De Heem's earliest paintings are precocious fruit pieces produced in his native Utrecht under the influence of Balthasar van der Ast. This panel of about 1640 is a simple paean to bacchic pleasure, and to textures and light.
