This is how you can apply a professional finish with Tru-Oil. I have personally finished around 30 guitars with tru oil, and it's a great finish. You can apply it by hand, and you don't need any fancy equipment. A small bottle can do a few guitars, and it's inexpensive. With a little practice, you can apply a great looking finish.
