Silas Deane Online
This 18th Century Clock Jack is still operational and can be found at the Webb Deane Stevens museum in Connecticut, USA. It is in the original home of Silas Deane, a contemporary of George Washington. The rope to the left connects to a stone outside which, once wound up, stores enough energy to rotate the spit for about 20 minutes. It would have been an expensive piece of equipment in those days, but families who could not afford one would have had to turn the spit by hand, close to the fire.
