Bolton Abbey, North Yorkshire

After the dissolution of the monastries in 1539 the nave of the Priory was allowed to continue as a parish church and is still in use today as the parish church of St.Mary and St.Cuthbert. All the other priory buildings were stripped of their lead roofs, leaving the stone work exposed to the elements. Over time the stone structures weakened and began to fall down. Rather than leaving good stone to go to waste is was pillaged and today can be found in buildings up and down the Wharfe valley.

St. Martin’s Church, Canterbury, England, is the oldest parish church in continuous use. In 668 St. Martin’s was known to be the private chapel of Queen Bertha of Kent, a Christian Frankish Princess whose husband allowed her to practice her religion in the building which, according to Venerable Bede, had been in use before Roman times.

The Crowning Chair in Westminster Abbey, every British King or Queen has been crowned in this chair since 1308... that is bloody amazing!

WESTMINSTER ABBEY, THE CROWNING PLACE OF KINGS

Westminster Abbey does what it was intended to do: inspire awe and reverence. Ancient, it is filled with the ghosts of greatness, yet it is also history in the making. When I first saw the Abbey, I was struck by how old it was. It looked every bit its 1,000 years on earth with its sharply pointed Gothic arches and sturdy flying buttresses festooned with grimacing gargoyles to scare off evil spirits. Then as I walked around the Abbey I saw it had been built in stages, making it look almost…

Looking down from Rievaulx Terrace through a gap in the trees onto the ruins of Rievaulx Abbey. The ruins of Rievaulx Abbey are some of the finest Cistercian remains in the whole of England. The abbey was founded in 1132AD – the first Cistercian monastery in England – and survived until the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII in 1539, though by that time it had only around 22 monks rather than the 600-plus who lived their at the height of its power.
