One of the most ambitious of Vikings was Norwegian Harald Hardrada, ‘the thunderbolt of the north.’ It is for Hardrada’s role in the events of 1066 that he is perhaps best remembered. Pursuing a claim to the English throne he arrived at the Yorkshire coast with an invasion force of 300 ships. Hardrada’s men met with initial success but just five days later were defeated by King Harold of England’s men at Stamford Bridge. Harald was struck in the throat by an arrow and died.

The Battle of Stamford Bridge was won by Saxon forces led by King Harold II. The invading army of Harold Hardrada and rebels led by Earl Tostig were routed. The Battle saw the end of the immediate Viking threat to the throne.

The Battle of Stamford Bridge took place in the East Riding of Yorkshire in England on 25 September 1066, between an English army under King Harold Godwinson and an invading Norwegian force led by King Harald Hardrada of Norway. After a horrific battle, Hardrada and most of the Norwegians were killed. Although Harold repelled the invaders, his victory was short-lived: he was defeated and killed by the Normans at Hastings less than three weeks later.
