A Very Fine Italian 19th Century Ebonized and Parcel Gilt Pietra Dura Occasional Table by Enrico Bosi (active 1850-1865), Florence, the marquetry circular top inset with a floral spray and butterflies in lapis lazuli, marble and colorful stones, set in a conforming frame over the baluster form standard, raised on a leaf carved tripod base. Attached lablel reads "H. BOSI - Place S. Trinita No. 1 - Florence". Circa: 1860. Enrico Bosi was active from 1850 to 1865 and had his workshop in via Tornabuoni, later in Piazza San Trinitá in Florence, Italy. For several decades he supplied an international clientele who visited Florence and also exhibited internationally. Together with makers such as Francesco Betti, Bianchini and the Buoninsegni brothers, he filled the void left by the decline of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, supporting the high demand for these luxury objects by aristocratic and bourgeois patrons. He was a personal acquaintance of Victor Emmanuele II, who made him an equerry and acquired pieces from him, such as the cabinet on stand now in Palazzo Pitti, Florence. The end of the Tuscan Grand Duchy in 1859 spelled disaster for the pietre dure workshops, which had always been closely linked to the court of the Medicis. Notoriously uninterested in art, the House of Savoy, now the ruling family of the unified country, completely ignored their work, preferring instead to obtain their furnishings and gifts - which were bourgeois rather than royal - from private Florentine workshops, such as that of Enrico Bosi. Bosi established a workshop on the via Tornabuoni, Florence, in 1858, and for the forty years following exhibited widely, both in Italy and abroad. He was a personal acquaintance of Victor Emmanuele II, who made him an equerry, and he probably made the frame for the portrait of the King presented to the Bey of Egypt in 1870.
