Spc. Monica Brown, * 19 *, an Army medic. A vehicle was hit by an IED, her sergeant yelled, "Doc, let's go," and she went. She spotted two injured soldiers, under intense fire dragged them to cover, then received mortar shells and covered the injured with her body and started repairing them through a two-hour fight. She saved them both, and received the Silver Star.

Hampton Died January 2, 2004 Serving During Operation Iraqi Freedom 27, of Easley, S.C.; assigned to 1st Battalion, 82nd Aviation Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.; killed Jan. 2 when her OH-58 Kiowa observation helicopter was shot down by enemy ground fire in Fallujah, Iraq.

Army CPT. Sara M. Knutson, 27, of Eldersburg, Maryland. Died March 11, 2013, serving during Operation Enduring Freedom. Assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia. Died in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, when the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter he was in crashed during a routine training mission. There was no report of an enemy attack but the incident is under investigation.
