Works by Martin Droeshout, engraver of William Shakespeare's famous portrait for the First Folio. There were actually two Martin Droeshouts: The Elder (1560s – c.1642) and his nephew The Younger (1601 – 1650). The pictures on this pinboard have been attributed to Martin the Younger, who is also credited with Shakespeare's portrait. Lovers of Shakespeare have expressed much frustration over the years at how crude and unlifelike this image is compared to these other portraits by the same artist.
James Hamilton, 2nd Marquess of Hamilton, 1623. (the National Portrait Gallery lists the attribution as "possibly by" Martin Droeshout.)

William Fairfax, 1621. This portrait of the one-eyed soldier is signed "MD," and typically attributed to Martin Droeshout. Given the publication date, it would have been done around the same time or even before the picture of Shakespeare, yet it shows a great deal more skill and realism.

John Foxe, c. 1623-1630. Like Shakespeare's portrait, this image was engraved after the subject's death (in this case, much later: Foxe died in 1587).
