"In United States history, the Gilded Age is a period approximately spanning the final three decades of the nineteenth century; from the 1870s to 1900. The term was coined by writers Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner in The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today (1873), satirizing what they believed to be an era of serious social problems disguised by a thin gold gilding." Income inequality between the rich and the poor is now approximately what was during "The Gilded Age".

She was born into middle-class, Victorian society with all of its rigidity and staunch conformity. The society confined women physically, morally, and psychologically with restrictive dress and relegated them to lives of public and political inactivity. Yet by the early years of Eleanor's married life, women had begun to make great strides into the public sphere. It was along with many…

The Gilded Age Era

In 1900, millionaire George Vanderbilt purchased a large lot, formerly occupied by the Roman Catholic Orphan Asylum, that was diagonally opposite his mansion, where he planned to erect two fine townhouses. Vanderbilt had purchased the lot in an effort to protect the area from commercial invasion, because already a developer had expressed interest in the lot as the site of his new apartment building.
