Steal the Style: Downton Abbey
Lately it seems like everyone, myself included, can’t stop talking about Downton Abbey. Every week I wait expectantly for Sunday. I don’t want to miss a minute of the drama, the romance, the betrayals – or the furniture.I like to think of Downton Abbey as a sort of extended Apartment Therapy house tour, where we get to know the inhabitants very well. Sometimes I’ll rewind, not to catch a line I missed, but to get a better look at the interiors.
A wild rosewood and satinwood banded tray top table, the oval tray top with a zigzag veneered gallery and brass handles, with a sycamore, rosewood and satinwood chess and backgammon board below and a further leather inlaid backgammon well below, on spiral turned legs joined by an 'X' stretcher, with fine brass feet.
A mahogany writing table, the rectangular top with engraved brass moulding and brass line inlay above a frieze fitted with two drawers, anthemion mounts above the carved naturalistic lion legs with paw feet accentuated at the knees, all on a concave mahogany and brass inlaid plinth base.
A wild morado veneered, ebonised, gilt and satinwood banded occasional table, the rectangular top with protruding rounded corners, above three drawers and gilt spiral turned uprights, on ebonised and gilt ring turned splayed legs with brass cappings joined by a concave sided undertier.
