Begonia 'Escargot' - FineGardening
'Escargot' takes its name from the snail-like curl pattern at the base of the leaf. The foliage is striking enough to stand on its own but it's a good mixer, too. Use it with other foliage plants and brightly colored blooms.
Pacific Horticulture Society | A Bounty of (Hardier) Begonias
Lately, I've been experimenting with some of the newer, hardier selections of begonia in my Sacramento garden (USDA zone 9, Sunset zone 14). The groups in which I have found some of the hardiest selections for my garden are: semperflorens, tuberous, rhizomatous (including rex), shrub-like, and cane-like....

Ophiopogon japonicus Gyoku Ryu
"Simply irresistible" is the best way to describe Ophiopogon 'Gyoku Ryu', a dwarf mondo grass cultivar with thick, dark green, grass-like foliage that eventually makes a tight mat in even the worst garden conditions. Plant dwarf mondo on 6-12" centers for a wonderful evergreen groundcover. Ophiopogon 'Gyoku Ryu' could best be described as looking like a lush lawn of pre-mowed grass...what a great idea! If that's not enough, the rhizomes of Ophiopogon japonicus have long been used in…
Can't believe I never grew Begonias until recently...
If you have mild enough conditions to grow these tender cane type begonias outdoors year round, how could you resist them, even if they never bloomed? But they do, they do. I wouldn't care if they never bloomed, and now use them a lot in more protected shade gardens that don't get wind nor bake in the sun. Little Brother Montgomery anyone? Paul Hernandez towers over Montgomery. Also tucked in on the left side of the photo is Persian Shield, Strobilanthes dyeranus.

Asarum Splendens -- Bluestone Perennials
This silver-splashed, evergreen beauty brightens any shady niche. Large glossy heart-shaped foliage conceals unusual purple flowers tucked around the base of the plant in early spring. A showy, vigorous groundcover for shade. Asarum Spendens will spread with underground rhizomes. Thick leathery foliage will mound to a more lush appearance if planted near sidewalks or a barrier to restrict its spread.
Heuchera 'Venus' (Coral Bells)
Compact, Heuchera 'Venus' features large, silver leaves adorned with deep green veins. In late spring to mid-summer, panicles of small, bell-shaped, creamy-white flowers bloom on slender stems rising up to 15 in. (37 cm), above the semi-evergreen foliage. A terrific choice for adding a touch of color in the rock garden, perennial border, along paths or in containers.
Acanthus 'Whitewater' (Bear's Breech)
Luminous and vigorous, Acanthus 'Whitewater' (Bear's Breech) is a clump-forming perennial boasting a gorgeous variegated foliage of large, deeply cut, dark-green leaves adorned with creamy-white margins and splashes. In summer, the foliage mound is topped by erect flower stems bearing pink and cream, funnel-shaped flowers with hood-like purple bracts. Bear's Breech is easy to grow, requires very little care, lasts well in bouquets and makes striking dried arrangements. A bold and…
