Since deep veins of silver and gold were discovered near the present-day Nevada towns of Virginia City and Dayton in the 1850s, the Silver State’s economy and growth has been driven greatly by the mining industry. Wyatt and Josie Earp and Wyatt’s brother Virgil followed the silver to both Tonapah and Goldfield, where the 20-mule wagon train (above) was leaving toward the mines in 1905.
